선경 Kyung Sun

Professor of Korea University Medical School

Kyung Sun is a professor of Korea University, where he has served as a cardiac surgeon, a researcher, an educator, and an administrator.

After conclusion of the medical course in 1981 and the resident training in 1986 at Korea University, Dr. Sun served 3-year mandatory military service as an army surgeon and worked for Kurume University in Japan and Indiana University in US. As a clinician, he is as a skilled surgeon and has operated over several thousand cases of thoracic and cardiovascular surgeries. In 2001, he underwent Korean Artificial Heart (ANYHEART) implantation which was the world first clinical case of totally implantable artificial heart. As a researcher, he has involved in various medical device developments including artificial heart and VAD. As an educator, over fifty graduate students with Master or PhD degree were nurtured while he served as a professor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Biomedical Engineering together with KU-KIST Graduate School at Korea University. As an administrator, he served as Vice-president of Korea University for Medical Planning and Budget, Director of R&D Promotions Bureau at Korea Health Industry Development Institute, and CEO & Chair of Osong Medical Innovation Foundation.

Dr. Sun has founded Korea Artificial Organ Center and also played a key role in academic societies such as National Academy of Medicine Korea (Regular Member), Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery (Board Chair), Korean Society for Biomaterials (President), Korean Society of Medical & Biological Engineering (President), Asia-Pacific Society for Artificial Organs (Vice President), and Presidential Council for National Science & Technology (Committee Member). He became a Fellow by election of World Biomaterial Congress in 2014.
